Justice with Integrity,

Rooted in Community.

Meet Rick Gardner

As a dedicated and experienced legal professional, I am honored to announce my candidacy for the position of Tahoe Township Justice of the Peace. With a proven track record of upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and integrity, I am committed to serving our community with unwavering dedication.

I moved to Tahoe in 1962 and as a lifelong local, I have integrated my personal and professional skills deeply into this community.

Get to know more about me and why I’m running in the video below.

  • As a lifelong local of Tahoe since 1962, Rick Gardner’s commitment to justice extends well beyond the courtroom. Raised by parents who worked in the local casinos, Rick’s personal and professional roots run deep in this community. Throughout his career, he has been an active voice in addressing local concerns, participating in initiatives that aim to improve the quality of life for all. His dedication to advocacy stems from his belief that a just and fair legal system is the cornerstone of a thriving community.

  • Rick Gardner’s career has been built on the principles of integrity and fairness. He believes that every individual deserves equal access to justice, no matter their background or circumstances. Upholding the highest ethical standards both on and off the bench, Rick is committed to ensuring that everyone who steps into his courtroom receives fair and unbiased treatment. His dedication to impartiality means his decisions will always be based on facts, with justice as the goal.

  • Rick is committed to maintaining open lines of communication with the community he serves. As Justice of the Peace, he pledges to listen to the concerns of his constituents and keep the judicial process transparent. Rick believes that trust in the legal system is built through transparency, and he is dedicated to fostering an environment where the community feels heard and involved in important decisions.

  • Rick Gardner believes that the safety of citizens and visitors is paramount in all judicial decisions. While keeping criminals off the streets is necessary, he also advocates for sentencing that balances justice with the overall well-being of the community. Rick’s experience wrestling with complex issues like domestic violence and drug-related crimes informs his approach—he understands that solutions often require more than just jail time. By collaborating with law enforcement and exploring mental health resources, Rick aims to address these issues holistically.

  • Rick recognizes that domestic violence is an issue that has no place in Tahoe Township, yet continues to impact families. He acknowledges the efforts made by the District Attorney’s office, including a dedicated officer for prosecuting domestic violence cases, but stresses that more work remains to be done. Rick is committed to continuing these efforts and ensuring that those affected by domestic violence receive the protection and support they need.

  • Rick Gardner knows that drug-related crimes still affect many families in the community. He doesn’t see the problem as black and white and believes that simply incarcerating individuals without addressing the root causes—such as addiction—won’t solve the issue. Rick advocates for a more nuanced approach, one that involves collaboration between the sheriff’s department, judicial system, and mental health services to create long-term solutions.

  • Mental health is a key component in addressing many of the issues facing the community, from addiction to criminal behavior. Rick Gardner believes that mental health resources should play a more prominent role in the judicial system. By integrating these resources into the process, Rick hopes to create more compassionate and effective solutions that help individuals heal while promoting safety within the community.

  • Rick’s experience running businesses in Tahoe, from restaurants to construction companies, has taught him that a healthy workplace is key to success. As Justice of the Peace, he aims to improve the workplace environment within the court system, prioritizing employee retention and well-being. A stable and happy workforce pays dividends in terms of efficiency, morale, and the quality of service provided to the public.

  • Rick Gardner envisions a judiciary that not only upholds justice but also actively contributes to the betterment of the Tahoe Township community. His vision includes creating innovative programs and partnerships that improve safety and well-being for all residents. By electing Rick as Justice of the Peace, the community is choosing a leader who is dedicated to fairness, equity, and the long-term health of the district. Together, Rick and the community can build a future where justice works for everyone.

"I've known Rick Gardner for over 30 years and can attest to his strong ethical values, legal expertise, and management skills.

He is the right choice for Judge, bringing a deep understanding of the law and a commitment to justice."

Retired Douglas County Sheriff

Community

How I Came to Douglas County and Community Involvement:

My family's journey in Douglas County began in 1962 when we moved to the area. My parents established themselves in Tahoe by operating the Red Hut Café stores, while my father also ran a construction company.

I graduated from Whittell High School in 1979, and after completing my college and law school education, my wife and I returned to Tahoe, where we have resided ever since. All four of our children are proud graduates of Whittell High School as well.

Today, my wife manages the Red Hut restaurants, and my son and I oversee the family construction business, alongside my law firm.

Giving back to the community has always been a family value. My mother served on the Douglas County School Board and the Park and Recreation Committee, while my wife continues her long-standing involvement with the Park and Recreation Committee.

I have dedicated two terms to the Planning Commission and spent 11 years on the Tahoe Douglas District Sewer Board, along with serving on the Douglas County Sewer Authority Board.

In addition to these roles, I have coached and mentored numerous youth teams in soccer, hockey, skiing, and baseball, including coaching Whittell to a State Championship in baseball.

We are also active supporters of community fundraising efforts through the Red Hut.
